A Short History

The inaugural meeting of the re-formed Otley Canine Society was held at the Textile Hall, Bradford on 17th May 1976, with Mr J Seaman in the chair, he opened the meeting by introducing the President Mrs Dewhirst and welcoming all members.

He explained the reason for the re-formation stating this was basically the clash of dates between the Wharfedale Agricultural Society and the Leeds Championship Show. The canine section of the Otley Show felt it was impossible to stage an Open Show in direct competition and therefore decided to re-form the old society and stage a show on a different date.

The officials of the Society were proposed and seconded by the former committee and approved by the meeting as follows President Mrs K B Dewhirst, Vice President Mr E Gill, Chairman Mr J Seaman, Vice Chairman Mrs C D Holmes. The former Committee who had collected money for the new society were then elected en-bloc these were Mr J Seaman, Mrs C D Holmes, Mr T Coates, Mrs B S T Holmes, Mr S Meek, Mrs M Spencer, and Mrs M Wood. Five more members were then elected on to the committee these being Mr B Lupson, Mr J Mitchell, Mrs M Naylor, Mr K Prior, and Mrs Williams. It was then decided that the positions of Secretary and Treasurer be combined for ease of duties and economy.

A License was granted from the Kennel Club for the first 75 class Open Show on Sunday 19th December 1976, at the Drill Hall, Baildon Barracks, Shipley, and the Baildon Barracks, was also booked for Match Meetings on the third Tuesday of every alternate month the first one being 21st September 1976.
